  Now that I've got that bit of smart-alec out of the way... I would assume common usage of the term refers to those foods to which we turn in times of stress or celebation, and/or just needing a moment's comfort.

    I think too, that there is also often a strong element of nostalgia involved. In most of my fave comfort foods, this is certainly the case!
